The Burned-Out Blogger's Guide to PRThe Burned-Out Blogger’s Guide to PR
My first book, published in Fall 2014. My aim was to capture the bizarre dynamic between tech companies and reporters — without putting anyone to sleep. I’m told it’s a quick read.

“Amazing, Hilarious And Mostly True”
TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington

“So real it’d make tech writers have flashbacks.”Matthew Guay, Techinch

Did a number on me, but what a ride.

Some highlights:

Here be pirates

Remember when the big record labels tried to drive fear into the hearts of fledgling music pirates by suing regular people — grandmas included — for life-crushing sums of money?

A decade later, the record companies threw a party at Sundance… and I found a den of pirates with a taste for hypocrisy. (The ensuing furor led the CEO of VEVO to write a public explanation the next day.)

Zuckerpunked

Facebook and TechCrunch had a contentious relationship during our feistier years that culminated with Zuckerberg & Co. punking us by deploying a feature called Facebook Fax, which let you send Facebook photos to any fax machine (it actually worked, but we were the only ones who could use it). I subsequently made my debut in The San Francisco Chronicle as the reporter who had written about a feature that, “Doesn’t Exactly Exist”.

The perplexing setup… Facebook Now Lets You Fax Your Photos. I Have No Idea Why Anyone Would Want To Do This

…and the stirring conclusion: Yeah Ok, So Facebook Punk’d Us

TC Cribs

I was the host and co-creator of this series of startup office tours, featuring endearingly awkward geeks, ridiculous amenities, and great art. Emphasis on awkward; the following episode was recently recognized by Reddit’s taste-making community Cringe for “having it all”.

OMG/JK

A tech-focused talk show I co-hosted with MG Siegler. MG is the eloquent and sharp Apple fanboy who has gone on to become a General Partner at GV (the firm formerly known as Google Ventures; maybe we should keep calling it that).

Friends Don’t Let Friends Use ‘Friends’ in Facebook Headlines
Reporters are prone to using groan-inducing puns in their headlines, with little concern for originality. I fought back by taking screenshots of the offenders and scribbling on them. My tireless and noble efforts were recognized by TechCrunch.
